What is Levitra?

Vardenafil, commonly known as Levitra, is another popular erectile (ED) medication in the PED5 inhibitor class of medication.  It functions similar to the other popular ED medications such as Viagra and Cialis.  Levitra has a short half-life that is slightly longer than Viagra but significantly less than Cialis, and therefore, functions more similarly to Viagra.

Erectile dysfunction is extremely common in men, and it is estimated that over 3 million men in Canada over the age of 40 suffer from it.  Levitra works to treat ED quickly by relaxing the smooth muscle which in turn increases blood flow to the penis in order to obtain and maintain an erection.  Weak blood flow equals weak erections, therefore, increasing the blood flow will result in a stronger erection and the increase in ability to maintain it.  Sexual stimulation must still be obtained in order to produce an erection – this medication will not produce an erection on its won.  The effects of Levitra are pretty straightforward — it will remedy erectile dysfunction in men who have a blood flow issue but will not remedy a libido issue.  If the issue lies in a hormone imbalance, no ED medication will remedy the erectile dysfunction issue and an alternate form of treatment, such as testosterone replacement therapy, should be considered.    Some studies have also shown that Vardenafil may also aid in preventing premature ejaculation and may result in greater penis rigidity than with Viagra, however, this data shows that it tends to be more individualistic and varies from person to person.

All PED5 medications function in a similar manner – they work by blocking the phosphodiesterase type 5 enzyme, thereby increasing nitric oxide.   Nitric oxide then binds to the guanylate cyclase receptor, thereby increasing cGMP levels.  This creates a smooth relaxation of the muscles to the penis, creating a clear pathway for increased blood flow, and a better chance of achieving a strong erection.  In healthy men, nitric oxide is released during sexual stimulation, resulting in an erection; Therefore, those who require a PED5 inhibitor for ED will rely on this class of drug to stimulate the release of nitric oxide after stimulation occurs.

Side effects of Levitra are both dose and genetic dependent; Some men may experience side effects and others will not. The presence of side effects is very difficult to predict. If side effects of Levitra occur, especially severe, the individual may find more success with another PED5 inhibitor. Changing medications will often remedy the issue, but in other cases the use of a PED5 may not be right for the individual.  If you are concerned, you should speak with a healthcare professional.  Many men report side effects to be less when taking Levitra compared to Viagra.

Please note: this drug does NOT protect against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, hepatitis B, gonorrhea, syphilis, etc.).  It is recommended that an alternate form of protection, such as latex condoms, is also used to prevent pregnancy and transmission of STD’s.

What is the recommended dosage?

This medication is taken by mouth, with or without food.  Levitra is commonly prescribed to treat ED by taking the medication as needed, 1-2 hours prior to sexual activity.  The dosage is based on each individual’s medical condition, and any questions or concerns should be directed to a physician.  In our opinion, a beneficial dosage for most men would be to take 1 tablet 1-2 hours prior to sexual activity.  This medication should not be taken more than once daily.
